EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
